Write-up
01 · The brief
A sourdough pizzeria in Kodigehalli, Bengaluru, competing with every other pizza place in the city on the same words: fresh, authentic, wood-fired. Its actual difference is a process — dough fermented for 48 hours, stretched by hand, baked in a wood oven, served in a garden.
If a visitor cannot see that difference in the first screen, the site is just another menu with a photo on top. The brief was to make the process the story, and the menu the evidence.
02 · What I built
One page, in the order a hungry visitor reads it: a full-bleed photograph of the pizza, the promise in four words, the signature dishes with prices, the story of the fermentation, the full menu split into eight sections, the garden setting, desserts and drinks, and a single phone number to book.
The menu is the long part, and it is deliberately plain: dish, one line of ingredients, price in rupees. No dish needed a photograph, because the page already spends its images where they earn attention.
03 · What’s on the page
- A serif display face against warm neutrals, so the page reads as a restaurant rather than a template
- Section labels in small caps that tell you where you are without a sticky menu
- Signature dishes given names and prices above the fold, because that is what people scroll for
- One booking action — a phone call — repeated in the header and at the end
- Location, hours and phone number in the footer, matching what the business lists elsewhere
04 · What I’d fix next
The page weighs about 12.6 MB on a phone, almost all of it photographs served at full size. Measured with Lighthouse on a simulated slow 4G connection, the largest image takes 4.8 seconds to appear. That is the single biggest thing wrong with this build, and it is fixable without changing the design: serve each photograph at the size it is displayed, in AVIF or WebP, and let the ones below the fold load late.
The site also has no canonical address and no structured data. For a restaurant, a Restaurant block with the address, hours, phone and menu is exactly what search engines and AI assistants look for, and right now they have to guess all four.
05 · What it means for your site
A restaurant site has one job before the menu: make someone hungry and make the booking obvious. Do that with one strong photograph, not fifteen — and check the page on a phone on mobile data, because that is where the fifteen photographs are actually opened.
